Her Writing Speed is Dyslexic
This series of 12 collages were created as part of a small-scale research project whilst studying for a Master’s degree.
Why is first person narrative important in research areas?
Whilst there is a range of research on dyslexia, there is a gap in research that includes the voices of dyslexic people, particularly in exploring how academic experiences impact students with dyslexia. Most research focuses on overcoming challenges related to dyslexia rather than first hand experiences. The addition of first-person narrative in this research area could help dyslexic students see themselves reflected in the discourse, allowing them to be heard and seen in the research. llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
What is evocative autoethnography
Evocative autoethnography is a type of qualitative research that emphasizes first-person narratives within cultural contexts. This research style aims to build empathy for the topic being discussed by drawing on personal experiences to engage the reader emotionally.
Ethical considerations .
Whilst undertaking this research project I was aware the autoethnography is a contended ethical ground. As I am researching myself I ensured I had a support system for any distress reflecting on past experiences could bring up. I ensured that I felt comfortable with the way the work expresses my experiences and represents myself acurately. Where autoethnography can become complicated is the belief that all of our experiences are tangental to other people. In this case I want to be clear that the research undertaken is a reflection of my experiences only and should not be taken as a representation of a wider group.
Arts-based research oooooooooooooooo
In arts-based research the researcher undertakes an art making process to understand a concept. The theory is that text and image have equal impact to knowledge acquisition. Barone and Eisner (2012) emphasise that the art making process and outcomes can bring new insights to the research area. LmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmkkkkkkkkmmmmL "Arts-based research provides a way to explore the multiple layers of meaning that reside within an experience, something that can be particularly difficult to achieve through more conventional methods" (Barone & Eisner, 2012, p. 8).
Data coding
For this research project I used thematic analysis to code the visual data in the collages produced and the reflective journals. I coded the information and from the codes found the common theme of identity.
